Who is an AI Citizen? Here’s Why You Should Know

An AI Citizen, as defined by Stallion AI CEO Samer Obeidat in his book, “The Artificial Intelligence Citizen” is a person who understands their role and responsibility in the emerging AI-powered future and is committed to the ethical and responsible use of AI for the benefit of humanity.

Mark Zuckerburg once said about Artificial Intelligence: “Whenever I hear people saying AI is going to hurt people in the future, I think yeah, you know, technology can generally always be used for good and bad, and you need to be careful about how you build it and you need to be careful about what you build and how it is going to be used.”

A known AI optimist, the Facebook founder stressed through the above quote that the single most crucial factor that will determine the role AI plays in humanity’s future will be shaped by society itself. Society is, of course, you and I. We hold all the cards.

What is the value of this deck of cards that we carry and how can we best play the hand that we hold to achieve the best possible results now and in the future? The answer is straightforward — we must all become AI Citizens.

To become an AI Citizen is first to understand what Artificial Intelligence is and its increasing space in our daily lives. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the capacity of a computer system to perform tasks that are typically associated with intelligent beings e.g. the ability to reason and learn from previous experiences. Think about that for a minute. AI is essentially a computer system acting in much the same way you do!

AI is nowhere near the complex intellectual capacity of a human being even though it functions through neural networks modeled after the human brain. Still, it has taken over several operations and performs them with higher accuracy and speed than a human can. Today, AI is used to make predictions about financial markets, diagnose patients in healthcare, and even advocate for women’s rights!

The last example from above references Sophia — the social robot designed by the Hong-Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. Sophia is a human-like robot that has gained celebrity status in recent years. She was awarded Saudi-Arabian citizenship in 2017, becoming the first robot to be granted that status.
